The Perfect Dress

So my sister recently announced her intention to get married and brought her boyfriend home to introduce him to the family. The boy was approved and his family declared as most decent.

Now three months later, after all the excitement and tears of joy, we are all bracing ourselves for the big day.

There are lots of functions that are going to take place before we reach the finish line of The Great Indian Wedding Drama.

The first one of these is the engagement ceremony.

It’s basically just exchanging rings and introducing the bride and the groom to the entire extended khandaan of both the families.

Slowly but surely the things are being crossed out from the ‘Things To Do’ list. The venue is finalized, talks with the caterers are on, designs for the rings are being browsed through and the bride to be is out shopping every weekend to find that perfect dress.

And this is when we come to the most important part of the entire drama. Well the most important part for me.

The dress.

That is what we are all waiting for. Well ‘we’ as in me and all the girls and women in the family. Ladies seldom have much interest in anything else other than clothes. And we are no different.

Everybody is planning and prodding and searching for what they want to wear. It’s the first wedding of the family and the excitement is almost killing us.

Though I’m not so much into clothes and dressing up but I’m equally pumped to find something appropriate to wear. It should be wow enough to make me look like the sister of the bride, but not so wow that it overpowers the brides dress.

And If I know my sister, who hates anything shiny, glittery, heavy, and basically anything that makes you look like an Indian bride, she’s going to pick out something really simple and understated.

And my love for bright pop colors may make me look overdressed in front of her.

Designer boutiques, local shops, Pinterest, Google, my mom’s sari collection, I’ve gone through it all.

I’ve shortlisted a few dresses but I’m still confused. Everything I’ve selected has either glitter or pop colors. And my sister might just pick out something in a pretty pastel color! This thought is driving me nuts!

I usually don’t care about the latest trends, fashion and stuff like this and wear whatever I like. If I’m happy and comfortable with what I’m wearing, I won’t give a damn to what others think.

But to overpower my very own sister on her engagement is not where I want to tread.

So now I’m running to every market in Delhi in sweltering heat to find that perfect dress for me.

And it’s turning out to be one hell of a job.

Trying To Be A Swan

I have always been a a tomboy. I don’t remember when was the last time when I tried to synchronise my hair and clothes. So that means I’m always in a messy state with my hair tied up in a tight braid so that they stay away from my face and my clothes always picked up from the boys section, because lets admit it, boy’s clothing are designed for comfort!

Even when I’m in office, I dress up like really casually without bothering to even use a lip balm!

But now for the past few days, all my friends have started suggesting me that I need to get into the girly mode because if I ever want to get into the dating scene, being girly would help me go a long way. I argued that if a guy does not like me the way I am then he is definitely not the kind of person I would ever want to be with. But I do agree with them that I need to refine myself and be a little more sophisticated.

So now I’m facing the dilemma of how to get into the breezy mode after being in the hurricane mode all my life.

So this weekend I sat down to jot down a list of stuff that I need to do to get myself into this classy and sophisticated mode.

Here’s all that I could think of to get a little more polished-

1. Learn how to walk without tripping or banging into stuff. In short stop walking like a hurricane just entered the premises.

2. Start taking care of my skin. Now I have no idea how to do that. I have a super       sensitive skin that reacts even to the mildest of moisturisers. I even wash my face with sandalwood paste and rose water because I can’t use any face wash. Therefore I can’t use any sun block and I always end up with a really tanned skin. 😦

3. Try a different hairstyle- I need to get rid of the boring braids and do something new with my hair. I’v searched every possible hairstyle that Google could offer me and have realised it is too much of work!! All I can do is shampoo and condition them and hope that they behave.

4. Get some girly clothes- Though I’m never going to get rid of my hoodies and sweatshirts, I will try and get some feminine looking clothes from the women’s section. (I nearly always buy clothes from the men’s section. The small size fits me and they are super duper comfortable! Alas! I won’t be doing that much any more)

5.I could say that I should use some make up but my sensitive skin just does not agree with it.

6. Use a nice signature scent. I usually end up using deodorants meant for men. 😛 . In my defence, I like strong smells. But I guess I’l go and get a ‘femininely strong scent’.

7. Accessories- I guess I’l have to replace my Ray Ban aviators and converse sneakers with….ummm….Ray Ban aviators(I will never part with them) and ballerina’s??

8. Try and talk softly. I am a true blue Punjabi, and Punjabi’s are loud! I can try and tone down the volume a little but that’s about it. I can never let go of the ‘Punjaban’ in me.

9. Try and keep calm and don’t loose your temper- I have a very short temper. And when I lose it, all hell breaks lose. I guess I need to get that under control and be more composed.

10. Last and not the least, I could just ditch the above list and remain as I am.

Ok. No.*Take a deep breath* I have to get a little polished. Maybe I’l just go with the hair and clothes thing. And maybe the temper also. Oh forget it, I’l try and do the entire list and see what becomes of me!

Lust List-Vol. 3

Lust List Vol 3

Every year, when Diwali is just around the corner, I go absolutely bonkers about ethnic clothes. And this year is no different. I’m in absolute and unadulterated love with this desi ethnic list.

1. Peach Net Sari with dori work– This sari by Meena Bazaar caught my attention because of its gorgeous colour. I’m loving peach this season and this sari is just breathtakingly beautiful.

2. Contrast lehenga on net– Love. Love. Love. Light, fuss free, not OTT and so pretty. Need I say more?

3. Diamond necklace by Nakshatra–  Beautiful design. I drooled over this piece the moment I saw it, but the price tag  that came along with it sadly bought me back to my senses. But some day this baby is going to be mine. *makes steely resolve face*

4 Georgette Sari with sequins work– Apart from its pretty colour, this sari screams festivals and weddings!

5. Diamond earrings by Nakshatra– Ok, I admit I’m going overboard with diamonds, but just look at these! Aren’t they gorgeous?? And they would go with everything ethnic.

Lust List- Vol 2

I’m back with the second volume of my lust list. This month, Iv been insanely attracted to Indian ethnic wears and heavy neck pieces which is pretty strange because I can never wear any such stuff owing to my super sensitive skin!

LL

1. The gorgeous off white sari that Deepika Padukone recently wore for the promotion of her upcoming movie. This Sabyasachi piece had me drooling over it the moment I saw it flash on my television screen. Classy and sophisticated.

2.Paris Hilton White Quilted Bag– Perfect for work or shopping, this simple bag grabbed my eyeballs and is the next bag that I plan to buy ASAP.

3. The Tanishq wedding jewelry– This kundan piece from their ‘Jodha-Akbar’ collection is stunning.  It’s neither too big, nor too small and is not the ‘in your face’ blingy. Loved it. But to get this I would probably need to win the lottery. *sigh*

4. The Urban Decay Naked Palette- Gorgeous browns, bronze and earthy shades. Need to glam up for a night out with gal pals? all you need is this palette and bright red lips and you’r sorted!

5. Carlton London Golden Bling Heels– I usually don’t wear heels because when I walk in them, I tend to trip quite a lot and end up spraining and bruising myself. But these are so pretty! I just couldn’t take my eye’s off these.

The Future Of Shopping

Shopping is a luxury for any girl. Every time I look at a dress or a pair of killer heels on-line, my heart craves for a few more zero’s at the end of my bank balance. Shopping today for me is ordering stuff on-line and blissfully waiting for it to be delivered. My mom though has a hard time trying to figure out how I end up shopping so much on-line when all the time I crib and cry about not having money! 🙂

C160

On-line shopping has made life so much easier for people like us who have to park their butts on their office seat for six days a week and on a Sunday are too lazy to go to a mall and indulge in retail therapy. 😦 It’s only been a decade since the on-line revolution came around and already the E-Commerce sites are fighting for the top spot.

My mom says there weren’t so many shops when she was my age. They had  limited variety when it came to shopping. But we have endless stores around us and then all these on line shopping sites! And still people like me end up being grumpy because I can’t find that perfect shirt to with my yellow skirt in such a sea of options!!

So if on line shopping is the source of our calm existence, what would our future generations do?

From what I can think of is, the answer is robots. The way all these sceintists are going on and on about how robots would take over the planet, I believe by 2030, we all would have our very own personal robot( Like we have a personal computer).

Hmm… let’s see, I’l maybe call my robot Robbie. And I’l programme him to love and understand my choice of dressing.

4

Robbie would be responsible for making sure I find the perfect shirt or skirt or heels or accessories.  All I need to do is show him the shirt I have and ask him to find out the best possible jeans that would go with it and it should be within my budget.

Robbie would then start searching all the possible options available for me on a giant digital wall in my room which would resemble a LED screen only much bigger. After zeroing on all the options that he finds from world over, he would create images of my wearing every article of clothing he finds so that I can decide which one looks best of me. of course Robbie would help me in deciding on what looks best!! 😀

Robbie would then connect to the robot of the seller of that jeans, who would then within minutes deliver me my package through a super sonic helicopter (Because the roads by then would be so choked of cars, we would all have helicopters and personal air planes for travel 😛 )

The payment would be made through Robbie who would on ensuring that I’m satisfied with the product transfer the virtual money from my personal bank that he handles himself! The physical notes for currency would be a thing of the past as there would hardly be enough tress to make any more paper! The oxygen itself would be scientifically made for us to breath!

And all I would have to do is make sure Robbie’s battery is well charged, because after helping me shop he also has to cook dinner!!!

*snaps back into reality*

Yeah….rather too far fetched, but that’s what I think would really happen in 2030. Imagine just sitting and relaxing on your bean bag while your “Robbie” does stuff for you…. *dreamy face*  🙂

Even if this is not exactly what happens, I’m pretty sure it would be something like this. Personal robots who do everything for you. All you need to do is programme them so that everything is done exactly how you want it. And they would make sure every detail is taken care of. 🙂

Lust List- Vol. 1

“Peaches and Blush” is one of the many blog’s that I follow. So when I saw the “Lust List” feature on it by the blog admin Mehak, it inspired me to get my lust list out as well.  🙂

Blog

  • The breathtakingly beautiful off white lehenga by Rohit Bal at the “Indian    Bridal fashion Week” At Amby Valley. The moment my eye’s fell on this        stunning garment, I realised this is what love at first site feels like! I can’t really tell if the golden motifs have been printed or embroidered, but it is hands down the best lehenga I’v seen in my life.
  • Lakme Absolute Royal by Sabyasachi Shine Liners: These are absolutely   gorgeous eye liners by Lakme! The golden and baby pink one are the          shades I’m going to grab with both hands!!
  • Lakme Absolute Royal Nails: These amazing pops of colour can brighten up a dull day! The Purple and Blue shade took my heart away!
  • Emerald And Diamond Rings: I totally adore emeralds. I like Rubies and Sapphires too, but Emeralds have a special place in my heart. And this ring is something I’m most definitely going to get some day. *makes determined face*
  • Chanel no 5 Eau De Parfum: This has  been on my lust list ever since I took a whiff of it 5 years back. One whiff and I was sold. At that time I had promised myself to get bottle when I grow up (Read have my own money). But alas! It still remains on the lust list. But hopefully soon I’l have this darling in my hands!
